Clean Filters
Over time a large amount of dirt and dust can build up in your air conditioner filters, preventing the system from working as efficiently as it should. Dirty filters can also put a strain on the system causing the unit to fail or break down, resulting in repair or replacement costs.
Cleaning your filters regularly is simple and you’ll benefit from clean, healthy air inside your home.
The following instructions are based on split-system air conditioners though can be applied to a number of household cooling units.
- Turn the air con power off at the switch or power point
- Open the plastic cover and remove the filter/s
- Give the filters a good brush or vacuum with the vacuum cleaners brush head
- If the filters are really dirty, they can be washed or soaked in some warm soapy water. Make sure they are completely dry before returning them to the air conditioning unit
- Replace the filters if they are damaged
- Give the louvers a wipe with a clean, soft cloth or vacuum
Clean the outdoor unit
It is just as important to clean the outdoor unit and keep it clear of dust, cobwebs, and dirt to allow proper ventilation.
You can give the air intake a vacuum, however only a professional should clean the internal components.

Evaporative, ducted or refrigerated cooling
With the air-conditioning units generally mounted on the roof of your home, it is not recommended that you clean these yourself. It is recommended that you engage a professional to clean and service every 12 months.
In the meantime, you can make sure the vents and associated filters are vacuumed and dusted regularly to prevent the build-up of dirt and dust.
If operating evaporative cooling remember that on humid days your cooler will operate best with the fan on high. If you notice that tiled and hard surfaces are damp you should direct the airflow across the ceiling rather than downwards. Also, make sure there are enough windows and doors open.
If you notice your refrigerated cooling system is dripping or leaking water you may be running your cooling too low, causing the evaporator coils to ice over and freeze. Try setting your temperature between 21-24 degrees on very hot days. If the system is still dripping or leaking water after you adjust the temperature seek the advice of a professional service.
